Cannibal is a unique blue water cruiser which has been sailed around the world twice by a husband and wife team. She is extremely easy to sail, set up to be handled single handed while the mate sleeps. Her helm can be so finely balanced that an Autohelm 3000 is sufficient for steering in winds up to 45k with accompanying seas. She is easily capable of 200+ nm in 24 hours. With the infinite adjustments available with the dagger and swing boards and the sail configuration Cannibal can be sailed flat, increasing the comfort and safety factors associated with sailing.
Cannibal has a long run box keel, 36 inches wide, which allows her to be beached when tides allow. She will stand upright. Because of her shallow 4.5 foot draft she can spend cruising time in much shallower water than most 54’ yachts. The dagger board drops to as much as 10’ for maneuvering in close quarters, or going to weather. The swing board along with the dagger board allows infinite adjustment of the lateral
plane so that the boat will track comfortably on any course through the water.
Cannibal’s hull is easily driven so in addition to the sailing capabilities, if the need arises, she can motor at about 6 knots for up to 2000 nm. The fuel capacity also allows the purchase of fuel where and when it is appropriate, rather than when it is necessary.
Cannibal was designed by Morgan Embroden and built by Dennis Choate in Southern California. Embroden was also the designer of the Trismus class of yacht so very popular in Europe. He was associated with Patrick Van God, the renowned European sailor and singlehander who tragically lost his life at sea. The design and construction revolutionized cruising sailboats for many years.
Within her 54 feet are very comfortable living spaces. A locker with water tight bulkhead at the bow is for sails and anchors, but much more can be stored in the space, such as fenders, lines, bicycles, etc. A Maxwell 2200 windlass easily handles the 3/8 inch High Test chain. The foredeck is clear and large enough that an 11 foot dinghy can be stored there and still have plenty of space to safely maneuver around the deck.
Interior spaces are finished with varnished teak. The forward stateroom includes a full sized bunk with hanging locker, storage lockers and storage under the bed. A washing machine is concealed within the area. The head with separate shower and additional storage complete this stateroom.
The main salon includes galley, dinette, navigation station and settee and more storage. All furniture is upholstered in dark brown Turkish leather from Istanbul. The galley includes a deep double sink, microwave/convection oven, four burner LP gas stove and oven, separate holding plate freezer and refrigerator and more storage. The navigation station includes a 24 mile Furuno radar, Yaesu 990 all bands radio, Icom vhf radio, and a Garmin GPS. A stereo with 12 cd changer is installed in the area.
Aft of the main salon is an additional huge hanging locker, a double berth to port in a stateroom and two sea berths to starboard and more storage. There is a head with toilet only in the area, with more storage.
The lazarette houses steerage, watermaker, generator and more storage. Two propane tanks in a deck box on the swimstep.
